If any one has read the 3 novels that support the Halo games, you'd read in several instances where Master Chief has more than the typical 2 weapon inventory. For instnace, he would be wielding an assault rifle, with a rocket launcher strapped to his back, and a holstered pistol. That could be something I could get used to.

Also, what do you guys/gals think about Bungie throwing in a squad based element seen in SOCOM or Ghost Recon. I mean there are a few other spartans left besides the MC...

the squad idea is cool but incase you havent noticed in ghost recon your team sometimes goes on with out you which kinda happens in halo when you are with other marines

Yeah, there are seven remaining. Fred, Linda, and John are at Earth, Kelly is with Dr. Halsey somewhere out in space, and the other three are fighting the Covenant somewhere else.

Couldn't they train new ones?

They are training 75 new ones, but it'll be a while before they finish.

Yes, you are exactly right, there are spartans left and there are being new ones trained, because in the Fall of Reach, CPO Mendez, (the man who trained the Spartans), left to go and train the next group of Spartans.

Thanks Dark Eagle for clearifying a situation yet again. I read all the books and love the game. A squad based game would sound nice if only you gave very simple orders. Like stop, follow me, and defend me. Anything else would be too complicated and hard to master while on legendary mode. Imagine, you are fighting many enemies and you must coordinate troops at the same time. That would be insanly hard.

Yeah, simple orders would be best, unless you could lay out a tactical plan before the mission starts. Multiple paths through missions would also be nice, not just like a fork in the canyon or whatever, but completely different ways of carrying out the objective. For example, you could be trying to kill Truth, and he's on a cruiser above the Earth. You could blow up the cruiser, board it via the shuttle bay and blast your way through the corridors until you reach him, crash it on Earth and then clean up the wreckage, plant gas cannisters in the air recyclers, blockade the cruiser and force him to surrender, wear them down with a hit and run strategy from multiple entry points, etc. That would let you implenent major tactical strategies and still be able to focus on the battle during the action.

That is a really good idea, but for those people who havent read the books, they would not really understand the significance of squad based fighting. I have read them all and i know that in The Fall of Reach, they did fight together and devise tactical strategies to accomplish the mission.

But the Master Chief that everyone has come to know from the games isnt about strategy and tactics, he is more about going in guns blazing and comming out on top.

But since there are more Spartans other than the Master Chief, squad combat is not out of the question, i think it would be cool, but not on every mission, maybe on some of the longer missions they could make squads, but i kind of like playing solo as the Master Chief as well.

All in all, i think it is a pretty good idea, I would like to see it in Halo 3, but for the people who dont take the time to read the books, it would probably be confusing and different for them.

Well, solo frontal attack would always be an option for people who liked it.
